Long Term Care

When a person needs assistance from a second person for an extended period of time for his/her physical and emotional needs, it is termed as long term care. Healthy and active people would take such requirement for granted, however the aged or ill can not survive without this kind of care. Our requirements change with the changing course of time. But, one thing is for sure that everyone has a right to maintain his health, independence, and dignity.

In today’s world with so many organizations and government working for betterment of quality of life, we have a variety of options to choose from. We can choose the type and duration of help as per our requirement.

There are various reasons which may cause a requirement for long term care. To name a few are terminal illness, some injury, disability to move independently either due to injury or due to old age etc. People who need 24 hour care and assistance may go for long term care option. This option provides them with round the clock availability of nursing and supervision. The caregiver would assist him/her in everything; from doing ones daily routine activities like eating, bathing, dressing etc. to escorting him/her to appointments etc.  As per the estimate, around 60% to 70% senior people need help from a second person in one or more areas or works during their life time. The duration of this long term care may vary from person to person. it may last just for a few months or it may go on for years. This duration depends on the requirement of the care. If a person is taking help to recover himself or herself from some long illness, or the care is being given for rehabilitation from hospital stay, the duration of the care may be just a few months. But, if someone is taking long term care in case of terminal illness, or due to permanent disability, or dementia etc., the care may be required for years or even for lifetime of the recipient.

This long term care can be provided to a person at his/her home or one has a choice to move to a long term care home as well. These long term care homes are specially designed for people who require full time assistance and supervision. Long term care home is a better option for people who can not live on his/her own than any other option like retirement homes or assisted living etc. There are various organizations which run this type of facility. Various municipal councils run municipal homes for elder people. These homes are either run independently or they are supported by other neighboring municipalities. In these long term care homes, all the basic requirements are taken care for, including furnishings, meals (as prescribed by the doctor), rehabilitation and recreational facilities, and 24 hour assistance, etc.

Before moving to a long term care home, one must find out about the facilities provided by the institution against the fees as well as additional facilities available and their cost. The standard of hygiene is very important and the satisfaction level of the residents of the facility should be considered in advance.
